INFORMATION
The CNC is a private association and a public service. The Centro Nacional de Cultura (CNC) was founded in 1945, during the Salazar era, as a area for meetings and dialogue between the different political and ideological sectors of society, in defence of a free and multi-disciplinary culture. Since 25 April 1974, the CNC has worked to transmit a notion of culture without boundaries, be they disciplinary or geographic. It tries to be the bridge which brings together those whose paths would not necessarily cross: old and young, artists and businessmen, public and private sectors.
A large part of its activity is dedicated to the defence of Portugal’s cultural heritage, the disclosure of the role Portugal’s culture plays in the world, the strengthening of links between members of the Portuguese-speaking community, and the stimulation of a permanent dialogue amongst artists and cultural agents within Europe. It pursues these objectives through publications, multimedia publications, exhibitions, courses, seminars and study trips.
It also promotes artistic and literary prizes and endows young artists with grants. It has created a multimedia databank on the heritage, which is designed to link up to other relevant databanks. It organises training in heritage, cultural tourism and new technologies applied to culture. It renders cultural services to associations, companies and local authorities. The CNC is a private association and a public service.
PATRIMATIC Patrimatic is the multimedia databank on Portugal’s heritage (both within and outside the country) and covers aspects of history, art, nature, ethnology and gastronomy. Each of the country’s 308 local councils is recorded in text, image and sound. There are special focal points such as “Portugal’s World Heritage”, “Cultural Itineraries”, “Heritage SOS” and “Prominent Heritage”. A special section entitled “Patridata” includes translation into various European languages of various Portuguese heritage works, made in unison with similar foreign databanks which, in their turn, have provided information on the heritage of their own countries. The central server, installed in the CNC, is linked by a network to a series of national and European terminals.
PORTUGUESE CITIES - CD-ROM A multimedia product, compiled from archive documents and films made in situ, with Portuguese and English versions on eight historic Portuguese cities.
PATRICUPNET On-line championship on the heritage of Europe’s regions. In preparation.
CAFÉ NO CHIADO Installed on the ground floor of the Largo do Picadeiro building, previously occupied by the Livraria Moraes bookshop, the Café no Chiado is a place for socialising which possesses a special atmosphere (traditional service, informal social gatherings, newspapers). Open from b lunchtime till dinnertime (thus providing a service to the S. Carlos, S. Luiz and Trindade Theatres), it is linked to the Ciber-Chiado and CNC library.
CYBER CAFÉ The Ciber-Chiado, open since 1997, founded a new generation of cyber cafés where enjoyment, culture and training are brought under the same roof. It is situated in the heart of the Chiado, adjoining the CNC library, has a calm and inviting atmosphere and is situated above the charming Café no Chiado where, at most hours and until late, one may order a drink whilst surfing the net.
CYBERCULTURAL GAMES On-line cybercultural games have been available since 1997 at the CNC site. A quiz game on universal culture and another on Portuguese culture may be played at home or live in the Ciber-Chiado area. The cybernauts who obtain the best scores win prizes, awarded by the CNC.
SUNDAY WALKS Inspired by the passage by José Régio “and they would take long walks on Sunday”, the CNC launched the idea for the first Sunday Walk in January 1979, with a departure point advertised in the newspapers, which was by the statue in the Terreiro do Paço. Since then more than 1,000 weekend guided visits have been made, in Lisbon and also, frequently, throughout the country. Through them, and with the support of specialists and local institutions, the historical-artistic and ethnological heritage of Portugal is coming to be known, through visits to museums, monuments, factories, city quarters, schools and artists’ studios. The nation’s heritage is also coming to be known through mountain hikes, river ascents, caving and potholing, and visits to nature reserves. They are called “a refuge for lonely hearts” by some. The truth is that much that is serious arises in play and laughter.
LISBON WALKS The Lisbon Walks are tours on foot conceived by the CNC for one to “discover” unknown Lisbon. They are for both Portuguese and foreign visitors, and can be by request.
TOURS: “THE PORTUGUESE IN SEARCH OF THEIR HISTORY” A series of tours which seek vestiges left by the Portuguese around the world and whose aim is to promote new forms of relationship in the present day on the basis of this common history. Tours have already visited Brazil, India, China, Thailand, Burma, Malaysia, Singapore, Morocco and Japan. One may obtain films produced by RTP (Radio Televisão Portuguesa) and “travel diaries” in book form on these tours.
FREE COURSES These are courses, held always at the end of the afternoon, which do not require specific academic qualifications and which are on the most diverse subjects of the arts and sciences, directed by well-known authorities in their respective areas.

CHILDREN’S WORKSHOPS: “THE YOUNG CITIZEN” It started as the “Chiado Workshop” programme in 1994 with music (opera), photography and plastic expression for youngsters between the ages of eight and 14, on Saturday mornings. Later came the “Awakening to Music” programme, which provided an area of greater depth than a simple introduction to music in schools, and which in 1994 included the teaching of the flute. Aimed at children of ages between four and five and from six onwards. Today it is called “The Young Citizen” workshops programme, and these have been active since 1997 for children of ages between five and eight. These are workshops in creative writing, English language, music, dance and citizenship. “The Young Citizen” is active in schools during weekdays, having an itinerant CNC team, and on Saturdays at its main building. In 1998 “The Young Citizen on Holiday” workshops were begun during the school holidays with “My computer (information technology)”, “Play English (language and music)”, and “Reading and narration (creative writing)” for children between the ages of four and 12.
| TRAINING ACTIVITIES The CNC promotes specific training courses in the areas of heritage, cultural tourism and new technologies applied to culture.
